The LUMIX G Micro System is a brand new digital interchangeable lens camera. It offers the high image quality, while reducing the size and weight of the camera body and simplifying its operation. Unlike a conventional digital interchangeable lens camera, this new-generation digital interchangeable lens camera is easy enough for anyone to use.

One of the reasons why some people have not stepped up from a compact camera to a Cámara Digital SLR is because of the notion that they're hard to use. Taking full advantage of new digital capabilities, an ultimate simple operation has been achieved in the LUMIX G Micro System. One of these is Full-time Live View with the LVF (Live View Finder)*1. Seamless Full-time Live View was achieved for both the LVF and the LCD, so you can confirm the effects of white balance, exposure, depth of field, and even shutter speed settings prior to shooting. The iA (Intelligent Auto) Mode that gained widespread popularity in LUMIX digital compact cameras was added, too. With 7 intelligent functions working automatically, iA Mode makes it extremely easy to take great shots both for still and motion images*2. These features combine the easy operation of a compact camera with the advanced functions of an interchangeable lens camera.

The LUMIX G Micro System complies with the Estándar del Sistema Micro Cuatro Tercios. The features that clearly set this standard apart from the Four Thirds System standard include a flange-back distance (mount-to-sensor distance) that is approx. 50% shorter, a lens mount with an outer diameter that is approx. 6mm smaller, and an increase from 9 to 11 electrical contacts in the mount*1. In addition, not only the camera body but also the Micro Four Thirds lenses are smaller, and this is particularly true for the wide-angle and high-power zoom lenses, while maintaining the superior image quality of the 4/3-type image sensor. The increased number of electrical contacts between the lens and the camera body will also allow a variety of new features and system functions in future models. And the Micro Four Thirds System will enable users to continue using their present Four Thirds lenses on Micro Four Thirds bodies by adding optional Mount Adaptor DMW-MA1*2.
*1 Image sensor diagonal dimensions are the same for both Four Thirds System and Estándar del Sistema Micro Cuatro Tercioss.
*2 Lenses that are not compatible with the Contrast AF function can be used with manual focusing.

Space is required for the mirror to move, so a proportionate flange-back distance must be provided.

The mirror-less structure needs no space for the mirror to move, and no penta mirror. This makes it possible to shorten the flange-back distance to about 1/2 the conventional distance, making the body more compact.
Using the new Estándar del Sistema Micro Cuatro Tercios made it possible to create an innovative mirror-less structure in an interchangeable lens camera. A compact, lightweight body was achieved by eliminating a number of components that are found in a conventional interchangeable lens camera, including the mirror for the optical viewfinder, the focusing glass, the penta mirror, the distance sensor for phase differential AF system, and the light sensor for auto exposure. The distance and light measurements that are conventionally performed by the mirror box are handled by sensors in real time, and highly accurate, high-speed auto focusing is achieved by the use of Contrast AF. The new system has also made it possible to reduce the flange-back distance (between the mount and the image sensor) to approx. 20mm — about half the approx. 40mm specified in the Four Thirds System. And the outside diameter of the mount is reduced by about approx. 6mm.
The key feature of an interchangeable lens camera is the ability to change the lens to match each shooting situation. The LUMIX G lenses and LEICA DG lens were developed in compliance with the Estándar del Sistema Micro Cuatro Tercios for use with the LUMIX G Micro System. Compact and lightweight, these lenses can easily be carried around.

The 4/3-type Live MOS sensor, with its wide dynamic range and low power consumption, and Panasonic's new Venus Engine HD imaging processor, with its superb noise reduction performance, are essential to the LUMIX G Micro System Camera's exceptional image quality with its twin CPUs in both photo and movie. And because dust entering the body is a concern with all interchangeable lens cameras, Panasonic equipped the LUMIX G Micro System with the Supersonic Wave Filter as part of the Dust Reduction System designed to prevent dust and other foreign matter from adhering to the image sensor.

The camera in LUMIX G Micro System has an HDMI output terminal that lets you view HD movie*1 and HD Photo images on any HDTV*2. With the AVCHD capability of the DMC-GH1, you can enjoy stunningly beautiful 1,080/24p full-HD movie on large screen*3. When the DMC-GF1, GH1 or G1 is connected to a Panasonic VIERA TV that has VIERA Link capability via an optional mini HDMI cable and the VIERA Link function is turned on from the camera's menu, the TV's remote control unit can be used to run movies and slideshows*4. Also, simply insert an SDHC/SD Memory Card*5 containing the still/motion images into a Panasonic VIERA TV or other HDTV equipped with an SDHC/SD card slot to view memorable moments of family and friends in the timeline.
*1 Full-HD (1,920 x 1,080) movie for the DMC-GH1 and HD movie (1,280 x 720) for the DMC-GF1. The DMC-G1 is not equipped with movie recording function.
*2 Requires the optional RP-CDHM15/CDHM30 mini HDMI cable. The output resolution of the DMC-GH1 and GF1 can be selected as 1,080i, 720p or 480p (NTSC) / 576p (PAL), and the DMC-G1 can be selected as 1,080i or 480p (NTSC) / 576p (PAL). Please confirm that the TV you are connecting to has an HDMI input terminal compatible with the selected signal.
*3 Full-HD (1,920 x 1,080) movies are output by the image sensor at 24p (NTSC) / 25p (PAL), and recorded at 60i (NTSC) / 50i (PAL). HD (1,280 x 720) movies are output and recorded by the image sensor at 60p (NTSC) / 50p (PAL).
AVCHD motion images recorded onto an SD Memory Card cannot be played on a device that does not support the AVCHD standard.
*4 Depending on the cable used, this function may not be possible. Panasonic HDMI cables are highly recommended.
*5 The SDHC Memory Card can be used only if the SDHC logo is indicated on the equipment or in the operation manual. It cannot be used with equipment that supports only the SD Memory Card.
The LUMIX G Micro System, breaks new ground in styling too, overturning interchangeable lens camera conventions by giving users a variety of body colors to choose from. Along with conventional black, the DMC-GF1 also comes in red, silver and white, the DMC-GH1 in red and gold, the DMC-G1 in red and blue body colors, and a wide range of accessories has been developed for it. Together, they make it even more fun to own an interchangeable lens camera.

The DMC-GF1, GH1 or G1 can be fitted with the mount adaptor DMW-MA1 that allows the use of a wide variety of high-performance Four Thirds lenses, including Leica D lenses. Naturally, the shooting functions of the DMC-GF1, GH1 or G1 remain usable with the DMW-MA1 mounted*. Unleash your creative possibilities, for example, by using a single focus lens to capture images with a beautiful, softly focused background, and an ultra-powerful zoom to pull distant wildlife right up close.
* Lenses that are not compatible with the contrast AF function can be used with manual focusing.

Rather than simply following the old analog format, the Four Thirds Standard was developed specifically to maximize image quality with digital photography. This system is based on an open standard, with all of the flexibility that entails. Manufacturers can use the Four Thirds open standard to create distinctive products that meet your needs.
