1. Take High-Definition Motion Picture Recording to the Next Level with New Generation AVCHD Lite and iA (Intelligent Auto) Mode
The demand for digital cameras that can record higher-quality movie has grown in step with the trend toward larger HDTV screens and new technologies of movie recording. Now, in addition to Motion JPEG images, the DMC-FZ35 (DMC-FZ38) can record high-definition motion picture in AVCHD Lite. It features almost doubling the recording time in HD quality compared with the conventional Motion JPEG format. The FZ35 (FZ38) also features Dolby® Digital Stereo Creator to record high quality audio, so you can match the beautiful motion images with outstanding stereo sound.
Now on the FZ35 (FZ38), the popular iA (Intelligent Auto) is now further advanced to also be available in motion image recording. Newly incorporated POWER O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilizer) helps prevent handshake even when using high-powered zoom. Face Detection automatically detects a face in the frame and adjusts focus, exposure, contrast, and skin complexion on it, so it always turns out beautiful. Intelligent Exposure continually checks the ambient light level and adjusts the exposure setting as conditions change to prevent blown highlights and blocked shadows. And Intelligent Scene Selector automatically switches between Normal, Portrait, Macro, Scenery, and Low Light modes according to the situation to optimize visual quality.
Motion image recording can be started by pressing a dedicated button on the camera's back panel -- an extremely quick, convenient way to start motion image recording. Most of the camera's settings will be carried over when switched to motion picture recording. The powerful 18x optical zoom is available in movie recording, too. A Wind Cut function is also available to block out most of the noise from background wind. The FZ35 (FZ38) also provides a Color mode and carries over 19 different Scene modes from photo scene modes in movie recording. In AVCHD Lite recording, you can select from three levels of motion image quality: SH (17 Mbps), H (13 Mbps) and L (9 Mbps).
*When you set the picture quality to HD, WVGA or VGA, we recommend using a high-speed card with "10MB/s" or greater displayed on the package.
*Motion pictures can be recorded continuously for up to 15 minutes in some countries.
*Continuous recording exceeding 2GB is not possible when recording motion JPEG. Remaining time for continuous recording is displayed on the screen.
*AVCHD Lite motion images recorded onto an SD Memory Card or a DVD cannot be played on a device that does not support the AVCHD standard.
2. 27mm Wide-Angle 18x Optical Zoom High Quality LEICA DC Lens with POWER O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilizer)
The DMC-FZ35 (DMC-FZ38) packages a 27mm wide-angle LEICA DC VARIO-ELMARIT lens with F2.8 brightness and powerful 18x optical zoom (equivalent to 27-486mm on a 35mm film camera) together with a 12.1-megapixel CCD into a compact body. The lens unit comprises of 11 elements in 8 groups, including 3 aspherical lenses and 2 ED lenses. Notably 2 ED lenses minimize the chromatic aberration that is likely to occur in telephoto images. This set of lenses secure picture quality high enough to pass Leica's stringent standards and delivers exceptional optical performance. With the long zoom range from 27mm to 486mm, equivalent to 18x, the DMC-FZ35 (DMC-FZ38) can be the best suitable camera to take expansive scenery with dynamic perspective and a close-up of a distant subject, having the appealing angle of view. This powerful zoom also works during the motion picture recording.
Further, in 3-megapixel resolution mode, the Extra Optical Zoom function uses the center part of the CCD to provide additional magnification, extending the zoom power to 35.2x.
The new POWER O.I.S. is extremely effective for high-power zoom shots, and clearly captures subjects in the ultra-telephoto range, which used to require a tripod.
*35mm film camera equivalent: 27-486mm.
3. Outstanding Basic Performance -- Superb Image Quality with the Exceptional Response and Enhanced Performance of the Venus Engine HD
The common concept shared by all new LUMIX products for 2009 second half is the seamless operation, which is indispensable for stress-free photography. In order to respond to the foremost desire of all photographers -- to catch every possible shooting opportunity -- Panasonic went back to the basics and developed an industry-leading, ultra high-speed AF that is twice as fast as its predecessor DMC-FZ28 while dramatically shortened the start-up time, too*1.
To realize the ultra high-speed AF, a number of re-engineering and improvements are made including the adaptation of higher-speed actuator, the optimization of algorism and the parallelization of software processing element. The result is ultra high-speed yet accurate AF performance for users to enjoy the airy shooting that has experienced never before. Panasonic also replaced its linear program processing with parallel processing to achieve an ultra high-speed start-up of 1.2 seconds, a remarkable 20% decrease from previous models.
The high-speed, high-performance Venus Engine HD has been re-engineered to support the recording of beautiful, high-definition motion images in AVCHD Lite. With its twin CPUs, Venus Engine HD boasts approx. 2.4x processing capability, greatly improving the speed of camera operations.
In image processing, luminance noise and chromatic noise are reduced separately before and after signal processing. This is further refined by separating noise two-dimensionally into high-frequency and low-frequency noise. The circuits then effectively reduce only the low-frequency noise to minimize the unwanted noise and help produce beautiful, sharp still and motion images.
This multi-task image-processing engine has a super-fast response time. The shutter release time lag is as short as approx. 0.007 seconds, making it easy to capture sudden, spur-of-the-moment photo opportunities. In burst shooting mode, the FZ35 (FZ38) can snap approx. 2.3 shots per second at 12.1-megapixel full resolution*2. In High-speed Burst shooting mode, it fires off an incredible approx. 10 shots per second*3. Newly added Flash Burst mode makes it possible to take consecutive shots with continuous emissions of the flash*4.
Despite its outstanding performance, the high performance engine is also more energy efficient to extend the battery life up to 470 shots (CIPA) per a single charge.
*1 The speed of auto focusing and the time for start-up vary depending on the shooting condition.
*2 Max. 5 images in standard mode / 3 images in fine mode.
*3 3-megapixel (4:3), 2.5-megapixel (3:2), 2-megapixel (16:9) recording. (approx. 10fps in Speed Priority mode / approx. 6fps in Image Priority mode)
*4 Max. 5 images. In 3-megapixel (4:3), 2.5-megapixel (3:2), 2-megapixel (16:9) recording.
4. Further Evolving iA (Intelligent Auto) Mode
With the DMC-FZ35 (DMC-FZ38), taking great photos is that easy. Panasonic incorporated the Intelligent Auto mode in pursuit of the ultimate ease of operation and the reduction of misshots. In iA mode the camera does all the work, leaving you free to compose shots and capture moments. Just press, aim and shoot. This mode is now further advanced with the inclusion of further advanced image stabilization system, POWER O.I.S. and Face Recognition for DMC-FZ35 (DMC-FZ38).
Taking advantage of Panasonic's accumulated optical technologies, MEGA O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilizer) has been incorporated into LUMIX cameras from the early stage of digital camera development. This helped to show all digital camera users the absolute need for hand-shake compensation, and led to its prevalence throughout the industry. MEGA O.I.S. has now evolved into the new POWER O.I.S. on the FZ35 (FZ38), with a great performance improvement -- twice the shake suppression capability of previous models.
The hand-shake component, which is physically generated when pressing the shutter button or when shooting at night with a slow shutter speed, is recognized as a low-frequency vibration, for which the new POWER O.I.S. is particularly effective. This greatly improves the quality of shots taken at night or indoors where a flash cannot be used, or where the photographer doesn't want to use a flash because it would spoil the mood. It captures beautiful photos in situations that previously resulted in blurring.
The FZ35 (FZ38) features Face Recognition*1, a function that "remembers" faces. When a familiar face is recorded several times, the camera will prompt you to register the face. Once completed, if the familiar face appears into your frame again, the camera will display the name you specified for the person and prioritize focus and exposure so that the registered face is bright and in sharp focus. Up to six people's faces can be registered, and up to three can be simultaneously recognized to show their names once registered. Three face images can be registered for each person, to dramatically raise the detection accuracy. And when the angle of view is changed horizontally, the name display also rotates for easier reading.
You can also specify the age of the registered subject and have both the name and the age of the subject stamped onto your photos. When babies under 3 years-old are registered, the camera will automatically switch to Baby mode if the baby appears into the frame. In playback, you can choose to display only photos that contain a specific registered face using Category Playback. You can also view image slideshows of only a selected person. Face recognition makes sorting and archiving incredibly easy. This advanced face detection system also digitally corrects unwanted red-eye during recording. With AF Tracking, the FZ35 (FZ38) can lock onto any subject and keep it in focus even if it moves -- making it easy to get beautiful, clear shots when a great photo opportunity suddenly arises. Simply aim, lock and shoot.
In addition to the advanced functions mentioned above, the iA mode inherits fundamental functions users need in a good digital still camera. These include Intelligent ISO Control, which reduces motion blur by adjusting the ISO sensitivity if the subject moves as the shot is taken. Intelligent Exposure optimizes the exposure for each part of an image, preventing blocked shadows and blown highlights and helping ensure that gradation and details are reproduced beautifully. It now features an automatic backlight compensation function that activates whenever the camera detects the subject is in backlight. Intelligent Scene Selector automatically detects the five most common shooting situations -- Portrait, Night Portrait, Scenery, Night Scenery and Macro -- and switches to the appropriate Scene mode.
The Quick AF system helps keep focus on the subject while the camera is in recording mode even before pressing the shutter button halfway. This improves the result out of a shutter chance because the focus is always near the subject and AF time is minimized*2. The user can activate all of these useful, convenient shooting-assist functions by simply selecting iA mode.
*1 Turn Face Recognition item ON and register the person with full-face portrait on the shooting menu in advance. Refer to back page for detail.
*2 The speed of auto focusing varies depending on the shooting condition.
5. HD Photos and HD Movies with VIERA Link Networking
Both photos and AVCHD Lite high-definition movies recorded by FZ35 (FZ38) on SD Memory Cards are easy to view on a Panasonic VIERA TV with dynamic HD resolution. The user simply inserts the card into the VIERA Image Viewer (SDHC/SD card slot) on a VIERA TV or Blu-ray Disc Player to play the content. Alternatively, an optional mini-HDMI cable can be used to output still and motion images recorded with the LUMIX DMC-FZ35 (DMC-FZ38) directly to the TV for easy VIERA Link operation. This makes it possible to take maximum advantage of the camera's playback functions, including slideshows in which both still and motion images are played sequentially, or calendar displays and so on. Operation using only TV's remote controller is super-easy.
In addition, with the included software PHOTOfunSTUDIO 4.0 HD Edition, it is easy to view and edit your recorded contents. You may also choose to upload your videos to YouTube or burn them to a DVD for archiving.
6. Intuitive Manual Control and Creative Option
The DMC-FZ35 (DMC-FZ38) concept goes much further than simply recording HD movies. Apart from the movie recording capability of conventional digital cameras, the DMC-FZ35 (DMC-FZ38) also features a Creative Movie mode, which lets the user set the shutter speed and aperture manually to make even more impressive movies. Changing the shutter speed brings special effects to movies, which is especially suitable for shooting fast-moving subject. The ability to control the aperture is convenient when there are several subjects at different distances and it is desired to have each of them stand out. Creative Movie mode gives the user a wider range of expressive possibilities to explore.
My Color mode, which was popular in the LUMIX G Micro System cameras, is a special option that gives free reign to the user's creativity. In My Color mode, the color, brightness and saturation parameters can be freely adjusted while seeing how the adjustments affect the picture lively on the monitor. This makes it easier and more fun to create interesting, expressive images. The user can adjust the settings that best suit the shooting conditions and his or her expressive intent, for greater photographic control.
The High Dynamic mode is newly added to the existing Scene modes. This mode helps to capture a scene with moderate exposure, even though the scene contains both bright and dark area together. The user can select either of three options, Standard, Art, or B/W, depending on the desired effect and personal taste to make the photo look natural to artistic.

*1 Panasonic in-house comparison. The speed may vary depending on the specifications of PC and the number of images stored in the PC and other condition.
*2 AVCHD Lite motion images recorded onto an SD Memory Card or a DVD cannot be played on a device that does not support the AVCHD standard.

*Recognition performance varies greatly depending on shooting conditions, i.e., according to factors such as angles, facial expression and lighting, so operation under all conditions cannot be guaranteed. Because the camera searches for faces that are similar to registered faces, there are cases where the faces are not correctly recognized when the registered image and the shooting image varies much. When facial characteristics are similar, particularly between parents and their children or brothers and sisters, the camera may not distinguish the faces.
*Dynamic tracking function may fail to lock, lose the subject in AF Tracking, or track different subject depending on the recording conditions.

25mm Ultra Wide-Angle 8x Optical Zoom Lens* in a Compact Body
12.1-Megapixel DMC-ZR1 (DMC-ZX1)
The Versatile Travel Camera with POWER O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilizer)
*35mm film camera equivalent: 25-200mm
Panasonic is pleased to introduce the LUMIX DMC-ZR1 (DMC-ZX1) digital camera from new ZR (ZX) series featuring powerful zoom with a remarkably slim and compact body. Newly developed lens unit including world's first 0.3mm super-thin aspherical lens and industry's first 0.3mm spherical lens realizes to fit the high performance 25mm ultra wide-angle 8x optical zoom lens*1 into the slim and compact body.
The powerful 8x zoom lens makes it easy to pull in subjects from far away a step closer compared to the conventional stylish point-and-shoot cameras. For an added boost, zoom power can be increased to 15.6x with the Extra Optical Zoom function*2. The 25mm ultra wide-angle feature is ideal for both broad landscapes and tight indoor shots, letting photographers capture a wider view. The 12.1-megapixel resolution allows photos to be greatly enlarged while still retaining outstanding detail, or edited by trimming and enlarging parts of the photo to print.
Panasonic's Intelligent Auto mode -- a hallmark of LUMIX cameras -- now includes POWER O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilizer) which features double the repression power compared to the conventional image stabilization system, MEGA O.I.S. The hand-shake, which is physically generated when pressing the shutter button or when shooting at night with a slow shutter speed, is effectively compensated by the new POWER O.I.S. to enjoy blur-free photography. In the popular Face Recognition*3 mode, up to three people can be simultaneously recognized to show their names on the monitor once registered.
Another main feature of the ZR1 (ZX1) is its high-speed AF, the industry's fastest level. Combined with a high-speed start-up of only approx. 1.1 seconds, this gives the ZR1 (ZX1) a fast response that helps to catch even the most fleeting photo opportunities*4. The 2.7-inch large Intelligent LCD offers dynamic and clear view out of its small body. The battery life is also as powerful as approx. 330 pictures shooting thanks to the highly energy efficient image processing LSI, the Venus Engine V*5.
Users can choose from a wide range of colors: silver, black, blue, white or red*6, all comes out with high-quality aluminum texture which resists fingerprints and soiling. With its slim, compact, pocket-fitting size and impressive specifications, the ZR1 (ZX1) is a great partner for traveling or for everyday snapshots.

1. 25mm Ultra Wide-Angle 8x Optical Zoom High Quality LEICA DC Lens in a Slim and Compact body
The DMC-ZR1 (DMC-ZX1) features a 25mm ultra wide-angle LEICA DC VARIO-ELMAR lens and powerful 8x optical zoom (equivalent to 25-200mm on a 35mm film camera) together with a 12.1-megapixel high resolution CCD into a compact body. The lens unit comprises of 9 elements in 7 groups, including 4 aspherical lenses with 6 spherical surfaces. Notably, Panasonic achieved the world's first incorporation of 0.3mm super thin aspherical lens and industry first 0.3mm spherical lens, both mold and mass production is difficult, into the newly developed lens unit. This makes it possible to fit the 25-200mm high performance lens in astonishing slim and compact body.
With the long zoom range from 25mm to 200mm, the DMC-ZR1 (DMC-ZX1) can be the best suitable camera to take expansive scenery with dynamic perspective and a close-up of a distant subject, having the appealing angle of view. This powerful zoom also works during the motion picture recording.
Further, in 3-megapixel resolution mode, the Extra Optical Zoom function uses the center part of the CCD to provide additional magnification, extending the zoom power to 15.6x.
2. Outstanding Basic Performance -- Superb Image Quality with the Exceptional Response and Enhanced Performance of the Venus Engine V
The common concept shared by all new LUMIX products for 2009 second half is the seamless operation, which is indispensable for stress-free photography. In order to respond to the foremost desire of all photographers -- to catch every possible shooting opportunity -- Panasonic went back to the basics and developed an industry-leading, ultra high-speed AF that is twice as fast as its sister model DMC-ZS3 (DMC-TZ7) while dramatically shortened the start-up time, too*1.
To realize the ultra high-speed AF, a number of re-engineering and improvements are made including the adaptation of a higher-speed actuator, the optimization of algorithms and the parallelization of software processing element. The result is ultra high-speed yet accurate AF performance for users to enjoy the airy shooting that has experienced never before. Panasonic also replaced its linear program processing with parallel processing to achieve an ultra high-speed start-up of approx. 1.1 seconds.
In burst shooting mode, the ZR1 (ZX1) can snap approx. 2.3 shots per second at 12.1-megapixel full resolution*2. In High-speed Burst shooting mode, it fires off an incredible approx. 10 shots per second*3 and the Flash Burst mode makes it possible to take consecutive shots with continuous emissions of the flash*4.
Despite its outstanding performance, the high performance engine is also more energy efficient to extend the battery life up to 330 shots (CIPA) per a single charge.
3. iA (Intelligent Auto) Mode Further Advances for Easy Photography
With the DMC-ZR1 (DMC-ZX1), taking great photos is that easy. Panasonic incorporated the Intelligent Auto mode in pursuit of the ultimate ease of operation and the reduction of misshots. In iA mode the camera does all the work, leaving you free to compose shots and capture moments. Just press, aim and shoot. This mode is now further advanced with the inclusion of further advanced image stabilization system POWER O.I.S. and Face Recognition*1 for DMC-ZR1 (DMC-ZX1).
MEGA O.I.S. has now evolved into the new POWER O.I.S. on the DMC-ZR1 (DMC-ZX1), with a great performance improvement -- twice the shake suppression capability of previous models.
The ZR1 (ZX1) features Face Recognition, a function that "remembers" faces. When a familiar face is recorded several times, the camera will prompt you to register the face. Once complete, if the familiar face appears into your frame again, the camera will display the name you specified for the person and prioritize focus and exposure so that the registered face is bright and in sharp focus. Up to six people's faces can be registered, and up to three can be simultaneously recognized to show their names once registered. Three face images can be registered for each person, to dramatically raise the detection accuracy. And when the angle of view is changed horizontally, the name display also rotates for easier reading.
With AF Tracking, the ZR1 (ZX1) can lock onto any subject and keep it in focus even if it moves -- making it easy to get beautiful, clear shots when a great photo opportunity suddenly arises.
*1 Turn Face Recognition item ON and resister the person with full-face portrait on the shooting menu in advance. Refer to back page for detail.
*2 The speed of auto focusing varies depending on the shooting condition.
4. HD Photos and HD Movies with VIERA Link Networking
All LUMIX cameras can take 1920 x 1080 pixel HD (high-definition) quality photos that perfectly fit a wide-screen (16:9) HDTV for full-screen viewing. The new DMC-ZR1 (DMC-ZX1) even records dynamic HD motion pictures in 1280 x 720p at a smooth 30fps, in addition to WVGA (848 x 480) and normal VGA (640 x 480)* **. For the DMC-ZR1 (DMC-ZX1) to be released in the sales areas of Europe and Asia, HD component output is capable so that you can enjoy watching still and motion pictures in stunning HD quality taken by your DMC-ZR1 (DMC-ZX1) by simply connecting the camera to a TV via an optional component cable (DMW-HDC2).
In addition, with the included software PHOTOfunSTUDIO 4.0, it is easy to view and edit your recorded contents. You may also choose to upload your videos to YouTube or burn them to a DVD for archiving.
*In Motion Picture mode, the length of recording time depends on the capacity of the SDHC/SD Memory Card. (Up to the equivalent of 2GB per motion-image recording.) When you set the motion picture quality to VGA 30fps, WVGA 30fps and HD (1280 x 720) 30fps, we recommend using a high-speed memory card with "10MB/s" or greater on the package. Some lens movement sounds may be recorded.
**For Europe, motion images can be recorded continuously for up to 15 minutes.
5. Other Options for Fun
One of the ZR1 (ZX1)'s unique feature is the newly added Travel mode. From the top menu, you can quickly go into the mode and organize various information related to your travel such as destination, date, world time and so on. It's also easy to play back images by designating the date or period of travel on the calendar menu interface.
About Included Software PHOTOfunSTUDIO 4.0
The latest version of the bundled software PHOTOfunSTUDIO 4.0 allows you to view, edit and archive your captured photo and motion pictures with greater ease and fun. The new PHOTOfunSTUDIO 4.0 features dramatic speed-up of operation by achieving 10x as fast as the previous edition for start up and 8x for initial image registration process*. The GUI is re-designed by adopting simple graphic elements and layouts as well as the incorporation of wizard method, making the operation more intuitive and extremely easy.
The portrait images taken with the camera's Face Recognition function are organized neatly in the folder of the name registered with the camera. Not only that, the software also features an independent Face Recognition function that recognizes the faces in the picture stored in your PC to sort the photos by the face speedily. You do not have to pick out each photo one by one out of thousand of photos when you only want pictures of a specific person. With PHOTOfunSTUDIO 4.0, the software automatically sorts your images into virtual folders based on the faces you registered. You can also enjoy slideshows with a variety of effects and use your iTunes music library as background music. Motion pictures can be uploaded directly to YouTube using the built-in YouTube uploader.
*Panasonic in-house comparison. The speed may vary depending on the specifications of PC and the number of images stored in the PC and other condition.

28mm Wide-Angle 4.6x Optical Zoom*
Futuristic All-Round Flat Design Body
12.1-Megapixel DMC-FP8 with Double Night Shooting Power by POWER O.I.S.
*35mm film camera equivalent: 28-128mm
Panasonic recently announced the DMC-FP8 as part of the new LUMIX FP Series, which pursues excellence in both design and function. The DMC-FP8 features a high-quality, 12.1-megapixel, 28mm, 4.6x LEICA DC lens with folding optics*1. The body is flat because of the retracting lens with folding optics which does not have a fixed lens barrel. Built of high-quality aluminum, this flat body provides an attractive design for the camera's rear surface, which is the part that is most frequently seen by the user. The blue LED cursor button also adds an elegant brilliance to the design each time they are pressed.
Panasonic's Intelligent Auto mode -- a hallmark of LUMIX cameras -- now includes POWER O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilizer) which features a double the repression power compared to the conventional image stabilization system, MEGA O.I.S. The hand-shake, which is physically generated when pressing the shutter button or when shooting at night with a slow shutter speed, is effectively compensated by the new POWER O.I.S. to enjoy blur-free photography. In the popular Face Recognition*2 mode, up to three people can be simultaneously recognized to show their names on the monitor once registered.
Another main feature of the FP8 is its high-speed AF, the industry's fastest level. Combined with a high-speed start-up of only 0.95 seconds, this gives the FP8 a fast response that helps to catch even the most fleeting photo opportunities*3. The 2.7-inch large Intelligent LCD offers dynamic and clear view out of its small body. The battery life is also as powerful as approx. 380 pictures shooting thanks to the highly energy efficient image processing LSI, the Venus Engine V*4.
This model brings an especially wide color variation to the series, with silver, black, pink, red, gold, green, violet, and blue to choose from*5. A cool hairline panel in the center of the camera adds an exquisite accent for a striking overall appearance. Beautiful when carrying about and shooting, the DMC-FP8 is a stunning all-round camera for users who are particular about both image quality and camera design.

1. 28mm Wide-Angle LEICA DC Lens with 4.6x Optical Zoom Fits in a Flat, Futuristic Design Body
The FP8 features a high-quality LEICA DC VARIO ELMAR 28mm wide-angle lens with a 4.6x optical zoom. The folded optics of the shaft guide method is adopted to secure the toughness of the lens unit. Comprising 10 elements and a prism unit in 8 groups, including 1 ED lens and 5 aspherical lenses with 6 aspherical surfaces, a difficult feat even by today's standards, this advanced lens unit passes Leica's stringent standards to deliver exceptional optical performance to the edges even adopting the folded optics.
Further, in 3-megapixel resolution mode, the Extra Optical Zoom function provides additional magnification, extending the zoom power to 9.1x (250mm*) by using the center part of the 12.1-megapixel large CCD.
*35mm film camera equivalent.
2. Outstanding Basic Performance -- Superb Image Quality with the Exceptional Response and Enhanced Performance of the Venus Engine V
The common concept shared by all new LUMIX products for 2009 second half is the seamless operation, which is indispensable for stress-free photography. In order to respond to the foremost desire of all photographers -- to catch every possible shooting opportunity -- Panasonic went back to the basics and developed an industry-leading, ultra high-speed AF while dramatically shortened the start-up time, too.
0.95 seconds.
0.006 seconds, making it easy to capture sudden, spur-of-the-moment photo opportunities. In burst shooting mode, the FP8 can snap approx. 2.3 shots per second at 12.1-megapixel full resolution*1. In High-speed Burst shooting mode, it fires off an incredible approx. 10 shots per second*2 and the Flash Burst mode makes it possible to take consecutive shots with continuous emissions of the flash*3.
Despite its outstanding performance, the high performance engine is also more energy efficient to extend the battery life up to 380 shots (CIPA) per a single charge*4.

3. iA (Intelligent Auto) Mode Further Advances for Easy Photography
With the DMC-FP8, taking great photos is that easy. Panasonic incorporated the Intelligent Auto mode in pursuit of the ultimate ease of operation and the reduction of misshots. In iA mode the camera does all the work, leaving you free to compose shots and capture moments. Just press, aim and shoot. This mode is now further advanced with the inclusion of further advanced image stabilization system, POWER O.I.S. and advanced Face Recognition for DMC-FP8.
MEGA O.I.S. has now evolved into the new POWER O.I.S. on the DMC-FP8, with a great performance improvement -- twice the shake suppression capability of previous models.
The DMC-FP8 features the Face Recognition*, a function that is popular in the previous LUMIX cameras, with several upgrades. Three face images can be registered for each person, to dramatically raise the detection accuracy. And when the angle of view is changed horizontally, the name display also rotates for easier reading.
Once you enter iA mode, these functions happen automatically together with other powerful shooting-assist functions -- AF Tracking, Intelligent ISO Control, Intelligent Scene Selector, Intelligent Exposure and Quick AF -- so you can shoot without the bother of adjusting settings every time conditions change. You can enjoy easy, trouble-free shooting in any situation and get the satisfaction that comes with capturing clear, beautiful images.
*Turn Face Recognition item ON and register the person with full-face portrait on the shooting menu in advance. Refer to back page for detail.
4. HD Photos and HD Movies with VIERA Link Networking
All LUMIX cameras can take 1920 x 1080 pixel HD (high-definition) quality photos that perfectly fit a wide-screen (16:9) HDTV for full-screen viewing. The new DMC-FP8 even records dynamic HD motion pictures in 1280 x 720p at a smooth 30fps, in addition to WVGA (848 x 480) and normal VGA (640 x 480)* **. With HD component output capability, you can enjoy watching still and motion pictures in stunning HD quality taken by your DMC-FP8 by simply connecting the camera to a TV via an optional component cable (DMW-HDC2).
A total of 27 Scene modes are available with the DMC-FP8 and the High Dynamic mode is new to be added. The Photo Frame mode allows you to shoot images with fine frame-like decorations, which is suitable for photos to give others as a gift. The High Dynamic mode helps to capture a scene with moderate exposure even though the scene contains both bright and dark area together. The user can select either of three options, Standard, Art, or B/W, depending on the desired effect and personal taste to make the photo look natural to artistic.

With HD component output capability, you can enjoy watching still and motion pictures in stunning HD quality taken by your DMC-FX65 (DMC-FX60) by simply connecting the camera to a TV via an optional component cable (DMW-HDC2).
The High Dynamic mode and Photo Frame mode are newly added to the existing Scene modes. The Photo Frame mode allows you to shoot images with fine frame-like decorations, which is suitable for photos to give others as a gift. The High Dynamic mode helps to capture a scene with moderate exposure, even though the scene contains both bright and dark area together. The user can select either of three options, Standard, Art, or B/W, depending on the desired effect and personal taste to make the photo look natural to artistic.

Panasonic Develops Two Compact Zoom Lens Units
Featuring the World's Thinnest* (0.3-mm) Aspherical Glass Molded Lenses
Mounted on the LUMIX DMC-ZR1 (DMC-ZX1) and DMC-FX65 (DMC-FX60)
*Dimension of the thinnest lens portion. As of July 27, 2009, according to a Panasonic survey.
[Outline]
Panasonic has developed the technology to mass-produce the world's thinnest aspherical glass molded lens[1]. The thinnest portion[2] of the lens measures 0.3 mm. Using the technology, Panasonic developed two zoom lens units -- one with an 8x optical zoom and the other with a 5x optical zoom -- for the LUMIX DMC-ZR1 (DMC-ZX1) and DMC-FX65 (DMC-FX65) digital still cameras. These two models also feature POWER O.I.S.[3], a new digital image stabilization system developed in tandem with the lens units.
[Benefits]
The newly developed lens units use super thin aspherical molded lenses that are half as thick as conventional concave lenses, thus enabling a further reduction in the thickness of compact digital still cameras. The DMC-ZR1 (DMC-ZX1) is equipped with a 25mm ultra wide-angle (35mm film camera equivalent), 8x zoom lens unit with a thickness of 20.4 mm, while the DMC-FX65 (DMC-FX60) comes with a 25mm ultra wide-angle (35mm film camera equivalent), 5x zoom lens unit. Due to the new lens units, the DMC-ZR1 (DMC-ZX1) and DMC-FX65 (DMC-FX60) are 2.1 mm thinner than previous Panasonic models with equivalent specifications.
[Features]
The new zoom lens units offer the following features.
1. Lower image distortion at the periphery and less flare and ghosting[4] for sharp, clear pictures
2. A smaller lens unit size based on an original design, while incorporating an optical image stabilization system

[Technologies]
The following technologies were employed to create the super thin aspherical glass molded lenses and the compact zoom lens units housing the lenses.
(1) A die and mold technology[7] for molding lenses with large differences in thickness[8], which is essential for producing super thin aspherical glass molded lenses
(2) An optical design technology that utilizes the characteristics of super thin aspherical glass molded lenses to achieve both a compact size and high performance
(3) A lens unit downsizing technology for achieving an optimal thin-dimension structure for the optical image stabilization system[9]
[Comparison with Previous Lens Units]
High-magnification lens units with more than 8x zooming power conventionally comprise a large number of lenses, thus resulting in a long unit size. This made it difficult to incorporate these lens units into a slim digital still cameras. Reducing the thickness of the lens also increases the difference between the thickest and thinnest portions of the lens and requires complex control in the thermal cooling process conducted after molding. These factors had adverse effects on the optical characteristics of lenses.
[Detailed Description of Features]
1. Lower image distortion at the periphery and less flare and ghosting[4] for sharp, clear pictures
- Minimum distortion at the periphery
Generally, as the field angle of the lens becomes wider, distortion tends to increase at the image edges with the wide-angle setting. In the newly developed zoom lens units, an aspherical lens is effectively arranged on the front lens section to capture images with minimal distortion at the periphery.
- Less flare and ghosting
At certain focal lengths, unwanted stray light commonly causes flare and ghosting on images captured by zoom lenses. In the development of the LUMIX zoom lens units, various tests were conducted while assuming a wide range of shooting situations, and appropriate countermeasures were employed to minimize flare and ghosting.
- Sharp, clear pictures
The image forming performance of lenses is improving, together with increased resolution achieved by a greater number of image sensors. In the newly developed lens units, the aspherical lens is optimally arranged to achieve high optical performance suitable for digital still cameras with 12-megapixel resolution or higher. When combined with the Venus Engine LSI, the new lens units capture sharp, clear images.
2. A smaller lens unit size based on an original design, while incorporating an optical image stabilization system
The compact lens unit was achieved by employing super thin aspherical molded glass and redesigning the optical image stabilization mechanism for further miniaturization. The DMC-ZR1(DMC-ZX1) is equipped with a 25mm ultra wide-angle (35mm film camera equivalent), 8x zoom lens unit with a thickness of 20.4 mm, while the DMC-FX65 (DMC-FX60) comes with a 25mm ultra wide-angle (35mm film camera equivalent), 5x zoom lens unit. Both the DMC-ZR1 (DMC-ZX1) and DMC-FX65 (DMC-FX60) are 2.1 mm thinner than previous Panasonic models with equivalent specifications.
[Detailed Description of Technologies]
(1) A die and mold technology for molding lenses with large differences in thickness[8], which is essential for producing super thin aspherical glass molded lenses
With conventional glass lens forming methods, reducing the thickness of an aspherical glass lens increases the difference between the thickest and thinnest portions of the lens, thus resulting in a greater deviation in shape accuracy. In addition, problems such as cracking can occur. Therefore, for stable mass production of lenses exceeding 15 mm in diameter, the lens thickness had to be about 1.0 mm. By developing an advanced die and mold technology that includes a newly developed material, structure and protective coating, Panasonic succeeded in developing mass production technology for the high-quality, stable molding of super thin aspherical glass lenses with the high level of accuracy required by digital still cameras.
(2) An optical design technology that utilizes the characteristics of super thin aspherical glass molded lenses to achieve both a compact size and high performance
The newly developed lens units utilize the characteristics of super thin aspherical glass molded lenses to reduce the overall optical path length in shooting as well as the thickness of the lens group, thus achieving a shorter dimension in the retracted condition. Zooming aberration is also minimized by drawing on the aberration corrective effect of the aspherical lens, and the super-wide-angle focal length of 25 mm and high power of the 8x/5x optical zoom as well as high overall optical performance are attained by an optical design that is capable of providing accurate image formation with minimal distortion at the periphery even at the wide-angle setting.
(3) A lens unit downsizing technology for achieving an optimal thin-dimension structure for the optical image stabilization system
The optical image stabilization system corrects blurring caused by hand-shake by using gyro sensors to detect hand-shake and by controlling the motion of the corrective lens group according to the detection signal. Panasonic reduced the thickness of the optical image stabilization mechanism by optimally arranging the corrective lens group, position sensor and actuator device, thus further reducing the thickness and size of the lens units.
Explanation of Terms
[1] Aspherical glass molded lens
A glass lens whose surface shape has a profile that is not a portion of a sphere.
[2] Thinnest lens portion
Dimension of the thinnest portion of a lens. In the case of a concave lens, the center of the lens is the thinnest portion. In the case of a convex lens, the periphery of the lens (edge thickness) is the thinnest portion.
[3] POWER O.I.S.
POWER O.I.S.(Optical Image Stabilizer) is a new optical image stabilization system that offers twice the hand-shake correction performance as the previous optical image stabilization system by incorporating higher-performance gyro sensors and a newly developed control system.
[4] Flare and ghosting
Flare and ghosting are phenomena caused by bright light entering the lens unit and reflected by the lens or the inside surface of the lens barrel that is not part of the captured image. A polygonal-shape light image is called ghosting, while a flare appears as a cloudy film over the entire image.
[5] F-number
The F-number is a numeric specification of lens units that indicates the brightness of the lens. The smaller the F-number, the brighter the images captured by the lens unit.
[6] Focal length
The focal length is a numeric specification of lens units. A short focal length yields a wider field of angle, while a long focal length provides a telephoto effect.
[7] Die and mold technology
Technology related to molding, such as the mold material, structure and protective coating.
[8] Lens with a large difference in thickness
A lens with a large difference between the thickest and thinnest portions.
[9] Optical image stabilization system
The optical image stabilization system minimizes image blurring caused by hand-shake. It works by moving a part of the lens group according to the degree of hand-shake. Compared to methods that use an electronic system or that increase ISO sensitivity to compensate for hand-shake, an optical image stabilization system provides superior correction performance without affecting the image quality or shutter speed.
